If we had a Euro for every website we’ve built that hasn’t been updated since it was launched, we’d have enough lunch money for a week. And this despite the fact that all our websites are built on a content management system which makes it very easy for the site owners to update them. The problem isn’t that they’re lazy or unimaginative, quite the opposite in fact, they’re often too busy with their business and other ideas to give their websites the attention they deserve. And that’s the thing; websites are like plants; they need care and attention if they’re to grow and flourish, if Google is to recognise and reward them. And the only way to do it is to make time for it – an hour a week, an hour a month, whatever you can afford. And if you’re too busy, ask a colleague or staff member, but whatever you do, make it someone’s responsibility and make them accountable. Because at the end of the day, a website that isn’t updated is almost as bad as no website at all.
