Thunders Bakery

Project overview

Thunders Home Bakery is almost as famous among Dubliners as Molly Malone. They opened their first shop in Drumcondra in 1969 and have expanded steadily over the years. They now have seven shops and three cafes across the city, the latest opening in Liffey Valley just before Christmas.

They are particularly well known for their cakes – anything from birthday cakes and christening cakes to wedding cakes and novelty cakes – the range is enormous. As a customer, you buy in-store or shop online.

We met them at a networking event a few years ago and since then have worked with them on various projects. When the opportunity arose to re-design their old website, we didn’t need to be asked twice. This was a ‘sweet’ website to design and we had lots of fun doing it. Our only regret is that we didn’t get to sample more of the merchandise!

The logo was already in place when we met them, and to be honest, there was no need to change it. The main focus, as we saw it, was not the logo but the brand story. We needed to capture in words and images what makes them different, what makes them special.

The answer, we concluded, was a combination of nostalgia and indulgence. There’s a real sense of tradition and place about Thunders. It’s where generations of Dubliners continue to shop for their daily necessities and special treats. We chose the line ‘Dublin’s Favourite Bakery’ because it underscores its popularity with people and pride of place.
