Thunders Bakery

Project overview

Thunders Home Bakery is almost as famous among Dubliners as Molly Malone. They opened their first shop in Drumcondra in 1969 and have expanded steadily over the years. They now have seven shops and three cafes across the city, the latest opening in Liffey Valley just before Christmas.

They are particularly well known for their cakes – anything from birthday cakes and christening cakes to wedding cakes and novelty cakes – the range is enormous. As a customer, you buy in-store or shop online.

We met them at a networking event a few years ago and since then have worked with them on various projects. When the opportunity arose to re-design their old website, we didn’t need to be asked twice. This was a ‘sweet’ website to design and we had lots of fun doing it. Our only regret is that we didn’t get to sample more of the merchandise!

Their previous website was built in WordPress and included an online shop. It wasn’t badly built but the design was a little suspect and the customer journey needed to be improved. People were landing on the website wanting to buy cake but were getting lost in the buying cycle. Our job was to simply the user experience, especially the home page, by making it easier for people to find what they wanted.

The result was a new website, which we re-built in WordPress because they were familiar with the content management system and because it has a good ecommerce capability. It’s also fully responsive so people on smart phones and tablet devices can view it perfectly. The website was launched in December and has already paid for itself in terms of conversion rates and sales figures. Sweet!
